Youth Learn to Scull

Youth Learn to Scull will follow a format and curriculum similar to AARC's Adult Learn to Scull program. Each class is made up of four participants per instructor; participants will begin training in doubles and progress to singles toward the end of the class. These classes are composed of four 2-hour sessions held in the morning during one week. Participants must be available for all 4 sessions to participate in the class.

Participation

To participate in YLTS rowers must have already successfully completed a Learn to Row program (through AARC, an equivalent rowing club, or a high school) and demonstrate basic rowing skill. All participants should be in good health and capable of enduring land and water-based non-trivial physical activity. Participants should expect to receive rigorous physical instruction on how to safely maneuver sculling equipment (weighing approximately 40-50 lbs) unassisted both on land and in the water. Participation in this course may not necessarily result in qualification to use AARC sculling equipment for unaccompanied use at the conclusion of the class. Youth wishing to learn to scull are only eligible to participate in YLTS and may not participate in one of AARC LTS programs aimed at adults.

Schedule

While AARC will do everything possible to honor these proposed dates, the YLTS schedule is subject to change before the end of May based on instructor availability. Please email Margaret (mlhudson@umich.edu) with any scheduling concerns before registering.

Registration

Registration for AARC Membership and all AARC programs must be done through the SPORG online membership registration system. The appropriate SPORG forms can be accessed by clicking the red "Register" buttons on each page. Credit card transactions happen online and checks can be mailed to AARC's post office box (P.O. Box 3128, Ann Arbor, MI 48106).

PLEASE NOTE: All rowers are required to pass a swim test, which must be signed by a Red Cross certified lifeguard or swim instructor. This is standard policy for USRowing affiliated clubs. The test must be completed by ALL rowers BEFORE getting into a boat. Details available on the Swim Test Page. Rowers who are currently rowing for a high school organization or participate in any other water sport for which they have passed a swim test may submit a photocopy of that previously completed form. A swim test must be on file WITH AARC before the youth can participate in rowing activities. You do not NOT have to complete your swim test to register. Please register online to guarantee a spot in a program, then complete and turn in the swim test prior beginning class. Completed swim test forms may be mailed in or brought to the first class.

For safety, all participants in youth programs MUST submit paper copies of the AARC and USRowing waivers in addition to completing the forms through online registration. Both forms can be found on the Forms Page.

If you have registration questions, please email aarc-info@umich.edu.
