Youth Learn to Row

Youth Learn to Row (YLTR) uses the same curriculum as our Adult Learn to Row program, but is specifically tailored for high school aged rowers with no rowing experience. The class covers basic rowing technique in addition to safety practices, equipment care, and basic coxing. The class will use both on-land training on the ergometer and on-water training using the side-by-side training barge and 8-person rowing shell.

Two identical YLTR classes will be offered this summer, each 3 weeks in length, held Monday-Friday, 4-6pm.  The first class will begin on Monday June 16th.  The second class will begin on Monday July 7th.  Regular attendance is highly encouraged, particularly during the beginning of each session, due to the cumulative nature of instruction.

Rowers graduating from the first YLTR session are encouraged to continue rowing with the Youth Technical Rowing program which begins immediately following YTLR Session I. Graduates from YLTR Session II who wish to continue in the Youth Technical Program will have the Technical program fees pro-rated for the remaining weeks of the summer. Requirements

No prior rowing experience necessary. In order to take one of YLTR classes, you must register online and pass a Swim Test. All rowers are required to pass a swim test, which must be signed by a Red Cross certified lifeguard or swim instructor. This is standard policy for USRowing affiliated clubs. The test is not required to register for YLTR, but must be completed by ALL rowers BEFORE getting into a boat. Details are available on the Swim Test page. Registrants who participate in other water sports for which they have passed a swim test may submit a photocopy of the completed swim test form. Completed swim test forms may be brought to the first class.

YLTR is intended for students who have completed the 8th grade and are age 13-18 years. We recommend that YLTR participants be a minimum of 5’ tall in order to use AARC equipment safely. Mature new rowers in their late teens and who are particularly tall may want to consider enrolling in the Adult Learn to Row program.

All participants MUST submit paper copies of the AARC and USRowing waivers in addition to completing the forms through online registration. Both forms can be found on the Forms Page.

Schedule

Classes are limited to 10 registrants, so sign up quickly to ensure your seat! YLTR 1 and YLTR 2 denote different sessions, but not different curriculums. YLTR 1 and YLTR 2 have the same instruction. AARC cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to your first choice class. Please select a second choice that you can take in case your first choice is full or cancelled due to under enrollment.

Classes in red are full.
