Club Sculling is the newest and fastest-growing part of AARC. AARC provides regularly scheduled coached practices for scullers of all levels, focused on skill and endurance training. We offer a safe and supportive environment for all scullers.
Eligibility
The minimum eligibility requirements of the Club Sculling program are:
- Pay AARC membership and Club Sculling dues or Club Sculling increment
- Graduate from Learn to Scull or have previous sculling experience
- Be able to:
- carry the boat unaided to and from the dock
- Launch the boat row to the lower dam and back dock the boat unassisted
- Pass a flip test (flip a single craft and get back into the boat unaided)
- Complete the AARC swim test
- Approval of the Director of Sculling
Participants must be 18 years of age, or else accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for all sculling sessions, either as another sculler, or as an observer in a launch.
Only club members who also are Club Sculling members may use the sculling equipment.
Use of the club equipment is based on a skills progression. The Director of Sculling tracks members’ skills progression and approves the following levels of participation.
- coached sculling practices
- rowing during all coached sessions (sweep and/or sculling)
- use of club equipment other than morning or evening coached practices (requires cumulative lifetime sculling on the water of 500KM and ability to row an entire lap of Argo Pond (dam to dam and back, approx. 6K) in 38 minutes or less)
Season
The 2008 sculling season for singles and doubles is projected to start in late April and end in October. Watch this site for an update when the small shells have been rigged.
The quad can be rowed during the entire sweep rowing season. If you are interested in rowing in the quad in the mornings or weekends e-mail jwenzlaff@a2crew.com.
Practice
Coached Practice
AARC provides weekly coached sculling practices throughout the sculling season, under the direction of the Director of Sculling and his or her assistants. Weather permitting, practices will begin Saturday, May 5 from 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM and continue through September 29 (the day and time may be changed based on rowers' preferences, but must be on the weekend). A second weekday practice is planned from June to August. All members who have paid Club Sculling dues and private boat owners (PBOs) who have paid the coaching and equipment fee are eligible to attend these practices.
Uncoached Practice
Approved members of the Club Sculling program may use Club Sculling equipment during morning and evening practice times. Please see the Club Calendar for current practice times.
Equipment
See the Equipment page for a full list of the AARC Club Sculling fleet and for equipment procedures.
Boat Reservation System
Reservation of club sculling boats is encouraged to ensure the fair availability of boats. Equipment can be reserved during regular morning and evening practice times, as well as during non-coached hours (for scullers approved for solo rowing). Boat reservations are made on the reservation board at the boathouse up to one week in advance. Members can only make two morning practice time and two evening practice time reservations per week. Members who wish to use the equipment more frequently can use non-reserved boats on a first come-first served basis. Reservations during non-coached hours are unlimited for those who qualify. Members who take out boats during off hours must return all boats to the boathouse 15 minutes prior to the start of coached practice times. If the sculler who reserved the boat is more than ten minutes late, the boat will become available to other rowers on a first come-first served basis.
Safety
Safety is the top priority of AARC. All scullers are expected to read and become familiar with the OAAR Safety Plan and the AARC safety policies. Additionally, scullers must be familiar with and agree to adhere to the additional safety requirements for use of small boats outlined in the safety section of this website. Independent use of the club sculling equipment is a privilege granted to those members who demonstrate proper safety techniques on and off the water. Any actions to the contrary will result in loss of boat use privileges. All club scullers are required to sign the boat out and in at each practice on the boathouse logbook. It is the responsibility of all scullers to report any damage to the boats to the Equipment Manager as soon as possible by email and to make a notation in the logbook.
