IT'S OPEN HOUSE TIME- WHO HAVE YOU INVITED?
Ever thought it'd be great to row with your sister or your best friend? Another opportunity to introduce someone you know to our wonderful sport is just around the corner. The AARC Open House is March 10 at the Boathouse beginning at 1 p.m (March 11 at the New Center if it rains). Please tell as many people as possible to come see what all the fun is about. And of course we can always use volunteers. Please e-mail Peggy Herron, Rowergirl@outdoorathlete.com if you can come down for an hour or two to lend a hand.
PAYING IT FORWARD
Remember your learn-to-row coach? How s/he nurtured and valued you oh-so-tenderly through your introduction to the sport? Friends, it might be time to pay it forward. There are eight LTR classes scheduled so far for 2007, 8 opportunities for you to shine in an instructional fashion. Until you teach a LTR class there's no way to know how much it adds to your own appreciation for the sport. Find out more about what's involved Tuesday, March 20 from 6-7 pm at Leopold's. At that time we'll talk about time, teaching priorities, and answer questions. I'll even bring instructional manuals so you can see what sort of info you get up front. Please RSVP if you're coming, and know that if you can't make that meeting you can still get involved, just contact Kristin Schrader at kristischrader@gmail.com. See what's new in LTR for 2007.

2007 ROWING SEASON NEARLY UPON US
Yes, you read that correctly! The 2007 on-water rowing season is set to begin in fewer than 5 weeks: April 9, 2007 will be our first day on the water! We will begin our regular evening practices on Monday April 9 from 6:30pm-8pm. In preparation for the season and true to its name the weekly email will now be landing in your inboxes on a weekly basis again. Take a moment to read through the newsletter to find out about upcoming events. And, to learn all about the upcoming season, please come to a General Membership Meeting on Saturday March 24 at 2pm at Arbor Brewing Company's Corner Brewery at 720 Norris Street, Ypsilanti, MI (then stay for the Beer Tasting Fundraiser!). We'll be providing information about this season's programs and general club functioning. In addition, the AARC website, www.a2crew.com will start showing updated 2007 information beginning next week, so keep checking back for more info! Finally, take some time to read through the calendar included at the end of this email; tons of dates for this rowing season have already been set, including membership meetings and many regattas. More dates will continue to be added! This off-season has been incredibly busy for the Board and Program Leaders and we are excited to get this season off to a great start. I look forward to seeing you all on the water soon!

SPRING WORK PARTY SET: GET READY FOR THE 2007 SEASON!
All on hands on deck for the spring work party! I know we're all anxious to get on the water, but there are many things we need to do to get ourselves ready to row. We have boats to rig, a boathouse to prep for the season, and general park stewardship to maintain (read: picking up trash) so please mark your calendar and plan to attend our spring work party on Saturday March 31 from 9 am - 1 pm. Jerry, our esteemed Boathouse & Equipment Manager, promises to provide fun tasks for all! As they say, many hands make light work, so come on down and get psyched for the new season.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
"The amount of recovery time between training sessions depends on the intensity of the session, whether more than one session was performed in one day, and perhaps most important, the athlete's diet."
"Because overuse injuries can cause so much trouble, the best strategy is prevention. Early in the season, rowers should work on problems with strength (especially core strength), rigging, and technique."
from "Rowing Faster," Volker Nolte (1996 Olympic Crew Coach), Editor
Hmmm. Maybe that heading should be "nutrition for rowing performance" ... or "power and protect your body." What is it about the athlete's diet that is so important? Which core muscles matter most? And how much does knowledge about these topics really matter to AARC rowers and scullers anyway? In the words of our own Kevin Alschuler: "It matters a lot." At the web link below, see more of what Kevin has to say and more about AARC's March 25 clinic covering nutrition, core strengthening, and erg technique, led by Cristin McCarty.
Cristin is training now full-time with the Canadian national team in London, Ontario. Her expertise in rowing, coaching, and sports nutrition is an uncommon blend. If you're interested in this March 25 clinic opportunity, please bear in mind these important registration dates:
By March 11, you're entered in a drawing for a free AARC sweatshirt.
By March 18, to confirm that there's sufficient interest to hold the clinic.
