HEAD OF THE OHIO REGATTA RECAP
AARC ventured to Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, October 1 to compete in the Head of the Ohio regatta. This race is held downtown along the river flowing past the baseball and football stadiums, and the course passes under nine bridges along the way. The weather was sunny and almost hot, with no wind.
The Masters 8+ womens entry was, as the starter declared, "in a class of its own," as they were the only entry in the 30-39 age category. Delayed slightly at the start due to fog, the rowers put on a great show for themselves, rowed a good piece and got in a good workout, and crossed the line in first place having passed several scullers from earlier races still working the course. After that they could collect their gold medal, get some coffee and food and enjoy the rest of the day.
The Masters 8+ mens entry was held later in the afternoon, and all participants had to endure lengthy delays, as first freight barges came down the river, and then at the start as the racing backed up with over fifty entries waiting to go. We sought shelter from the sun in the shadow of the bridges, and tried to find a final score of the UM football game while we waited. Once underway the race was exciting, and AARC finished second in their category. A composite DBC/Syracuse boat caught up with AARC in the middle third of the race but our men picked it up and went head-to-head over the final 500 meters, salvaging some pride and offering the viewers on shore a thrilling finish.
Andrew Whelan represented the scullers, and quite well. He rowed in the Mens Masters Single 40-49 event and finished a strong first to pick up a gold medal. Later in the day he rowed again, finished, and was, as he put it, tired.
Congratulations all!
