GOOSE POOP CHALLENGE

Ann Arbor, September 20, 2006 AP - A new world record time of 9:32.32 was set today by David Crouse in the Goose Poop Sweep (GPS) event. GPS is a burgeoning sport on many of the waterways in the migratory path of Canadian geese. The sport has been dominated by a relatively few early morning rowers who have opted to augment their on-the-water training regimen with the complimentary motions and timing that GPS affords. Crouse said he has been sweeping and rowing in various forms for nearly 30 years but decided to really get serious about GPS this year after his mentor Dave Barber retired from the sport. "I think this sport will really catch on once other rowers begin to appreciate the cross training benefits of GPS and rowing", said Crouse. Crouse's WR is nearly a full two minutes faster than his primary competition, Rob Durham. "It's hard to explain why I am so much faster than Durham in the GPS event especially since he clearly outperforms me on the erg and on the water", ruminated Crouse. "I guess I have just perfected the 'swing-dunk-return' motion while Durham appears to still be using more traditional GPS techniques. I'm also a little less squeamish about the medium than Durham, sometimes you just have to put your foot in it to excel--so to speak. I expect that there may be other approaches and techniques that could produce better GPS times but I feel pretty confident that I will stay on top of this event at least until a new generation of GPS competition emerges", concluded Crouse.

AARC will be offering free LTGPS courses throughout the fall season for any other club members that may be interested.

AARC SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The September AARC board meeting minutes are attached to this email. Minutes from previous board meetings are posted on the website at http://www.a2crew.com/admin/minutes.html

WELCOME TO NEW BOARD MEMBERS

To round out the board membership, the new members recently voted to appoint Sally Hilger and Michelle Nemshak to its membership for one-year terms. Welcome Sally and Michelle!

The process was done this way (electing 5, appointing 2) to solve an imbalance in our election cycles that resulted from several resignations. After considering and interpreting the Bylaws, the board decided this solution satisfied goals implied in several articles of the Bylaws (Article 4, Sections 1 and 3) -- ensuring both continuity of leadership and periodic injections of fresh blood to the board. By putting the board back on a 5-5 cycle, we're doing our best to ensure continuity, and by electing three new members, two returning members, and appointing two more fresh faces I think we're ensuring that the board is constantly evolving to reflect the changing nature of the club.

TYPICAL FALL COACHING SCHEDULE

Below is the typical weekly coaching schedule for the remainder of the season. On occasion a different coach will be filling in due to conflicts that we have scheduled around, but other than that you will see the coaches as assigned below. A copy will be posted at the boathouse as well.

For clarification: It was mentioned numerous times in the spring/summer that people were coached by the "wrong" person. i.e. "The ___ program coach coached the 'wrong' program tonight." The assignments are a guideline, but the number one priority is to ensure that all groups are getting appropriate coaching. Therefore, you will see the coaches rearrange their assignments to accomodate the group, most frequently when programs are combined (so that you get to row). ALL coaches coach multiple programs regularly (most have coached all of the programs over the course of the season), so we are familiar with all of you and can have the flexibility to switch things around to accomodate the group that is present.
