New Rule for Sweep Rowing Without a Coach:

Definitions:
Novice Rower: a rower who has not yet completed a Full Year of rowing, AFTER the year in which he or she completed Learn-to-Row
Full Year: three full seasons of rowing, including spring, summer and fall
Certified Launch Driver: individual who has completed an AARC waiver and has been authorized by the AARC Board to drive a launch, but is not necessarily a member of AARC, AND all AARC coaches, including any and all AARC members who have coached Learn-to-Row

Rule:
To be on the water, a sweep boat must be:
a) accompanied by a coach in a launch; OR
b) accompanied by a Certified Launch Driver, and if the boat consists of Novice Rowers in their first season of rowing then the launch must stay with the Novice Rowers and does not count as a Certified Launch Driver for other boats on the water, unless the boats stay together and there are no more than two boats per launch; OR
c) steered by a coxswain with at least one Full Year of experience coxing on Argo Pond and between the coxswain and the stroke seat there is a minimum of four Full Years of rowing experience, AND the boat is to stay below the bridges when it is dark.

This rule takes effect today.

Further Clarification:
For those who were familiar with the old rules, please note the changes. The experience requirement only refers to the cox and the stroke, the experience-level of 7-seat no longer matters. In addition to overall coxing experience, the coxswain must have one Full Year of experience on our own river. Finally, years of experience are explicitly defined in a new way - see below.

Here's an example of how to count years of experience - Sarah Marsh's:
2001 - LTR year
2002 - after this season, 1 yr. exp.; during this season, no experience
2003 - after this season, 2 yr. exp.; during the season, 1 yr. exp.
2004 - after this season, 3 yr. exp.; during the season, 2 yr. exp.
2005 - after this season, 4 yr. exp.; during the season, 3 yr. exp.
Right now, during the 2005 season, I can claim 3 years of experience.

Please take the time to understand this and then operationalize it. We know that it is more restrictive than in the past - that is intentional as we reconsider what makes a crew safe when they're on their own. Please take it upon yourselves to police yourself and your boatmates in following the rule. Also, please use general common sense - if you are a stroke or coxswain who does meet the requirements, but does not feel comfortable in the dark or going through bridges, please do not stroke or cox! Direct questions about the new rule to Lora Freeman (freemanlora@yahoo.com).

HEAD OF THE THAMES this Saturday!

Boat lineups and race times are attached to this email.

Derigging will be this Thursday AFTER practice; Rerigging will be Monday at 6 PM, prior to practice. Please have at least half your boat there to help!

Directions to London Boat Club are attached to this email. You can also go to www.londonrowingclub.on.ca for more info.

Make sure every rower SIGNS A WAIVER- in the envelope at the boathouse.

Make sure you PAY THE ENTRY FEE to your boat captain, and boat captains need to leave a check to AARC at the boathouse in the envelope. ALL SCULLERS need to leave a check to AARC in the envelope too.

FEES: (in US dollar, include trailering fee)
1x- $30.50/ person
4+- $56 $14/person
8+ - $72 $9/person

If you are interested in going on Friday night, some of us are staying at the Idlewylde Inn in London; their number is 877-435-3466 if you want to check for availability. Please talk with others you are rowing with about carpooling or caravaning there. I recommend getting gas BEFORE you cross into Canada; gas prices are higher there usually.

The weather report is fabulous for Saturday- clear and high 70! But be prepared for anything.

DON'T FORGET- your passport or birth cert, layers of clothing (it may be chilly in the AM), sunscreen, plenty of water, gatorade, snacks, energy bars. They have some food there but not a lot, and there isn't anything in walking distance. Also have your ID for the beer tent after rowing!

Any questions, please email Carly (cago@umich.edu), or on race day, call my cell # 734-355-8283.

HOW TO COX A HEAD RACE

For information on coxing head races, check out: http://a2crew.com/cox.html. This segment was written by Coach Kevin last year and checked over by Coach Megan this year. Feel free to contact either of them if you have questions.

HEAD OF THE OHIO Saturday October 1!

Signup and race schedules are posted- Please signup by this weekend if you are interested in rowing in Pittsburgh. FYI, there are no specific novice categories, but that doesn't mean novices can't row. There are masters 8+'s- women, men and mixed that novices could be entered in. The AVERAGE age of a masters boat has to be at least 30 yrs, the individual rowers have to be at least 21 years by the end of 2005.

This is the biggest regatta we go to as a club, many clubs and colleges attend, and it is a really fun atmosphere!

If you do plan to attend this regatta, we have access to some reserved hotel rooms for Friday night, through Pam B, since her rowers at EMU will not be going this year. FYI the women’s masters 8+ that we should be entered in, is at 9:30 AM, so you will definitely need to stay Friday night to do that race.

See below for more hotel info from Pam.

HOTO Hotel Rooms

I'm writing you in hopes that I can help AARC members as well as AARC members help me with something. I was planning to attend Head of the Ohio with my team, but due to budget cuts I have to cancel. I currently have 12 rooms booked in Pittsburgh and cannot get out of them without paying a very large fee. I have asked the hotel if I can fill the rooms with another club and the hotel is working with me to do this.

So, I wanted to get the word out to AARC members about this, but I do need to fill the rooms as soon as possible. If AARC members don't want them, and or if we cannot fill them with AARC members, I was going to check with other programs.

Details: 12 Rooms with double beds available at the Radisson Hotel Pittsburgh Green Tree, 101 Radisson Drive, Pittsburgh, PA, 15205. The room rate is $72.00 without tax (tax is 14%, so 82.08 with tax).

This was the lowest rate I could find for a reputable hotel. Most hotels that I looked into were already booked. Also most rooms are going for 85.00 or more before taxes! This hotel is also considered the host hotel for the Regatta. People who are interested can contact me via my work email pbesteman@emich.edu or call my work number 734-487-6690.I will be at the boathouse most evenings and can chat with anyone about this.

Thanks,
Pam

A reminder to inactive rowers and to scullers/PBOs about rowing in sweep boats

We have no mechanism for accepting payment for rowing in sweep boats on a drop-in basis. We will examine this in the off-season*, but until then you cannot row sweep without paying sweep fees for the current season. You're welcome to cox all you'd like!

*We'd love your input in thinking this through - email a board member to volunteer!

Calling all budding artists!

The 2005 AARC calendar was such a success we're doing it again! To create another beautiful calendar I'm seeking pictures you've taken since last fall, from winter erging sessions to regattas to BBQs to practice sessions -- anything rowing-related can go into the running. If you have some photos you wouldn't mind sharing (cropping and tweaking can always be done!), please let me know. And, as we head in to head race season keep those shutters snapping!

If you are interested in helping on the technical, artistic, or logistical side, please let me know. Calendar prep will be happening through the fall in hopes of having calendars ready near season's end.
