MCI Regatta Recap

Although NO National titles were awarded last weekend at the 2005 Michigan Club Invitational held on our very own Argo Pond, we all had some fine rowing. AARC once again held on to the Tom Kraft Cup team point trophy, and demonstrated the depth and breadth of our youth, novice, open and masters sweep programs, as well as our sculling programs. Congratulations to all who participated; special recognition to our novices, who experienced racing up close and brought home medals for the first time, and to our youth rowers, who just kept getting better throughout the summer. The valor in combat award goes to Delores Patterson who survived bodily attacks from both sides at the starting line. Memory moments are many: the pre-race early morning calm transformed into a packed, teeming parking lot, grass area and racecourse under a hot, steady sun; the novice men's four, with little practice, winning their race; the Adcomp women's masters 8+, picking themselves up after a boat-stopping crunch at the start and roaring back down the course; Andrew Whelan and Kate Bosher rowing in disguise; and much more. It is a special event we hold, a truly intimate regatta, and our guests had a great time.

Special thanks to all who made it work: to the volunteers, active members and others, who set up, staffed the tables, donated goods, worked the launches, the docks and the course, and who stayed around to break it all down; to Noel Cimmino, who planned it all out, and made it happen; and to our coaches, who coached and coxed and drove throughout the long day. Well done, all.

Wyandotte Tri-Meet Regatta: Sign-ups due Friday August 5 !!

On Saturday, August 13, Wyandotte is hosting AARC and LaSalle for a short-course sprint regatta. AARC attended this regatta last year and it was a great time. Wyandotte is a great rowing club, very similar to AARC, and they have a wonderful boat house, complete with bar/lounge on the upper level! After the regatta, they open up the bar for all participants to relax and celebrate afterwards, and meet some of the people from the other clubs.

The best thing about this regatta is that it is MASTERS ONLY (down to 22 yrs), with only NOVICE rowers and REC rowers, perfect for AARC! The races will begin at 8 AM, on a 1000 M course, and races are over by noon! And it is free...

SIGNUP SHEETS will be posted at the boathouse for novices, and for masters. Please put down if you would like to attend, and we will put together lineups. This is a wonderful regatta to attend; highlighting the essence of what is great about rowing for AARC- fun, friendly, competition! Please contact Mike Taft with any questions at yazbo822@comcast.net. Signups are due by the end of Friday, August 5. After this Kevin and the other coaches will assemble boats and lineups.

Here are the event categories:

Canadian Henley Regatta happens this week!

Several AARC scullers are competing at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St Catherines, ON this week. This event is the premier summer sprint regatta on the continent, and many of the top rowers attend. AARC scullers attending include: Carl Anderson, Pam Besteman, Kate Bosher, Sarah Brown, Cristin Mccarty, Mike Perry, Brian Tryon, and Andrew Whelan. You can track the results at http://www.henleyregatta.ca/results.htm. Good luck to all of you!

Note for the week: Hydration and Spinning

Please be sure you are drinking enough water at practice, especially in this heat. You should be drinking 4 to 6 ounces of water every time we spin. By request of the coaches, please drink while you are spinning so that we do not lose too much time sitting at the spin point. If we were on a larger body of water, we'd only spin once after about 30 or 40 minutes - we lose up to 1/3 of our practice time if the spinning takes 5+ minutes 4-5 times per practice.

Launch Setup

All rowers are expected to participate from time to time in setting up or breaking down the coach launches before and after each practice. This includes taking down gas cans, safety bags, launch oars, cushions and megaphones, unlocking boats, and starting motors. All items need to come back up to the boathouse after each practice: gas cans are locked back in the locker, bags and oars put away, and megaphone batteries recharged. Please help out with this task. Coxes: after you bring your boat in and put away, be sure to send one of your rowers down to break a launch down - if each boat sends one it goes quickly. Novices: if you do not know how to do this, ask someone (like Marcia Leonard or Kate Herrington). If you as a rower are exempt from coxing, you are expected to perform this task regularly: you do not have to sacrifice any rows to cox, so this is one of your paybacks.

Coxing

Thanks to all who are coxing. The next Learn-to-Cox Training Sessions will be held the week of August 15-19. Plan ahead to sign up to attend if you have not yet done so.

Also, Coxes: after each row, when your boatmates are getting oars or launches or wiping the boat down, you should write each rower's "R" on the coxing/rowing chart. As rowers, we sometimes forget, and this could be cleanly handled by the cox.

Morning Novices Need Coxwains and Experienced Rowers

The intrepid novices taking to the river in the mornings twice a week need coxwains and experienced rowers to help them along. They have a need every Monday and Thursday morning in August. This is a great group, and of course a wonderful time of day to be out. Please contact Suzie Larsen at suziesnowflake@hotmail.com to let her know when you can help.

LTRs Need Help - they need rowers and coxswains!

Beginning on July 30th or so, the current LTRs will need help with coxswains and sub rowers. One of these classes in particular has low enrollment so will need rowers every class (the T/Th/Sat session). All of the classes will need coxswains. Please please sign up to help them out! I've posted a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Confident, strong coxswains are preferred (don't necessarily need to have a lot of experience, but you do need to be able to set a good tone, a good example for the learnies!), so if you sign up, bring your best game!

Volunteers Needed for Sunday, August 7, QuickCatch - the last one of the season!

I know all members have been asked to do a lot lately, but we have one more QuickCatch to populate with volunteers... All members are eligible and encouraged to help with this fun event! Please offer to help with the QuickCatch on 8/7 (especially if you haven't done one yet this year).

Volunteers will check participants in, carry boats and oars, and row just a little in the 8+ with the participants. We need a few people (2?) to arrive at 9:15 and stay through 12:30. The rest of the volunteers (6?) need to arrive around 10:45 and stay through 12:30. These are fun, low-key... a nice way to meet new people, talk about our great sport, enjoy the morning light, make me quite happy, etc!

There are spots still available for more participants in the session too, so spread the word to your not-yet-rowing friends!

AUGUST AARC BOARD MEETING

The August AARC board meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 9th at 6:30 PM at Sarah Marsh's house. Please notify either me (wmackint@umich.edu) or Carly (cago@med.umich.edu) if you would like to attend and if you have an item that you would like to place on the agenda.

Secretary, AARC

NOMINATIONS FOR AARC BOARD DUE AUGUST 12

Submit your nominations for AARC's Board of Directors!!!!

Anyone in the club can nominate any member for the board (including PBOs). Any member can also nominate him- or herself, and in fact, we encourage you to do so if you have an interest in the board. We strongly encourage novice members to consider running for the board, because novices often have valuable new insights and ideas. We also hope that club scullers and PBOs will stand for election to boost sculling representation. In order to be a functioning governing body, the board needs representation from all areas of the club, including morning and evening open rowers, ad-comp rowers, novice members, club scullers, and PBOs. This year there will be 4 positions open for election.

Current Board Members include Carly Gomez (Prez, Programming, Sculling), Mike Taft (Veep, Operations), Janet Goldberg and Karen Berna (Treasurers), Will Mackintosh (Secretary, Programming), Ron Woodman (Marketing/PR, Coaching), Megan Gibb (Long-Range Planning), Sarah Marsh (Membership and lots of other stuff), Delores Patterson (Coaching), Lora Freeman (Safety/Risk Management), Tom Kraft (Boathouse and Equipment), and Margaret Hudson (Youth Rowing, Merchandising, Fundraising).

**Please email all nominations to Will Mackintosh, Secretary of the Board (wmackint@umich.edu), by FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 at 5 PM**

ELECTIONS will take place at the BBQ on Friday , August 26th, at which all active members will be eligible to vote. If you cannot be present, absentee ballots will be available the week before the BBQ.

Please contact me at wmackint@umich.edu with any questions about the nominations process, the elections process, the rewarding experience of being an AARC board member, or anything else at all.

Secretary, AARC

USE AND ABUSE OF THE AARC EMAIL LISTS

The various AARC email lists are strictly for rowing-related communications. This is especially true for aarc-active, which goes to the entire club. It should never be used for non-rowing matters, and please use it VERY sparingly for rowing topics (like last-minute requests for subs and such). Remember, every time you send an email to the list, it clogs the inboxes of hundreds of people!

The good news is that there is an easy and unobtrusive way for you to contact the rest of the club. All club members are welcome to use the weekly email for these communications. It goes to the whole club AND it gets put on the AARC website. To submit an item, email Barb Kraft at TandBKraft@comcast.net by Tuesday evening for inclusion in Wednesday's email.

Thanks for your help in reserving the AARC email lists for important matters.
