CLUB SCULLING PRACTICE SCHEDULE

Mark your calendar with these upcoming practices.

Please keep in mind that the coaches will be conducting the practices indicated and we would like all scullers attending the session to participate regardless of ability. If you are not sure that you have the ability to keep up with the group during more intense workouts, please feel free to express that to the coach. If the coaches feel you need more steady state work instead of piece work, we will suggest that to you.

Sessions need to begin on time. Please be at the boathouse by 5:55 p.m. (Saturday by 8:55 a.m.) We will meet with you on land at 6:00 p.m. (Saturday, 9:00 a.m.) to give you instructions for the workout. If you need to come late for whatever the reason, you are welcome to catch up with group and pick up where we are, but we will no longer hold the entire group for those coming in late. If you are on the water, but not with the group, the coaches are assuming that you do not want to be coached.

Thanks, Pam

MCI Week!

AARC is hosting its very own regatta this Saturday, and we need your help. This is the one event for which we need members to volunteer their time and energy. Please sign up on the board at the Boathouse. Many of us wish to row a few races, and we will be switching volunteers in and out of work stations to facilitate that availability.

Practices for the remainder of the week will be busy as well, and should all try to be flexible as we try to get in a practice row. As always, we will require coxswains at our practices, so step up and volunteer to cox as well.

A specific email on the regatta details will be forthcoming. Remember: please do not plan on parking at the Boathouse, as we require all the spaces in front of and behind the boathouse for our guests. Parking is available a short walk away (a good warm up) up or downriver, or across the river - details to follow.

Do bring a smile and some extra time. It takes a lot of work to run a smooth regatta and to be a good host. Let's have fun, row well, make our guests feel at home, and keep the Cup here at AARC.

We are looking for YOUR help for the food table at the MCI Regatta! Your donated food means a maximum profit for the club. Specifically, we are looking for donations of brownies, cookies, muffins and other treats. Also, if baking isn't your strong suit, but you would like to make a donation, we could use a case of water or Gatorade or purchased granola bars or bagels (we can supply you with specifics). Please let Karen L (klleach77@comcast.net) know if you are willing to help out. We also need a few more folks to sign up to man the food and merchandise tables during the regatta. All help is greatly appreciated!

MCI Volunteers Needed

Please sign up on the sign-up sheet that is posted above the key hanging area. There are over 20 different volunteer positions that will be needed for 3 different shifts (7:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30-1:30 p.m. and last shift from 1:30-4:30 p.m or when all is done). All members are expected to volunteer for at least one shift. If you are rowing that day, you will also need to help set up, in addition to taking a shift (regardless of race time).

Volunteer Position Descriptions:

Parking - Only work the morning shift, will make sure cars of rowers and supporters go to correct lots and stay out of main lot and make sure trailers go to correct places.

Registration Table - Variety of jobs including handing out medals, announcing the races, making sure all waivers are turned in and posting times from races.

Dockmaster - Make sure boats get in and out of the water smoothly and have their bowmarkers, making sure that no one hangs out in the runway where boats are coming on and off the water.

Starters - This is staked start so you'll hold the sterns of the boats still for the start.

Finishers - Must be able to operate a stopwatch. You will keep the times of the race.

Launch Drivers - You must have driven the AARC launches in the past to sign up for this job. You'll either be accompanying a USRA official, a timer or marshaling boats on the course and keeping out canoers.

Selling Food & Merchandise - self explanatory

Please e-mail Cherie Freed (cherif@umich.edu) if you would like to sign up and are not rowing anytime soon.

***IMMEDIATE SAFETY ISSUE***

We are being audited by the local Sheriff's department regarding SAFETY ISSUES, and the consequence for not following safety procedures EVERY TIME you are out on the water may result in a charge against YOU. For your own safety please read the Club Safety Rules on our website and the following Boater Safety handbook: http://www.boat-ed.com/mi/handbook/. Things to remember:

1-ALWAYS carry one PFD per person in the boat, either in the boat or in the launch. You must UNZIP the bag of PFDs while on the water.

2-ALWAYS carry ID while driving a launch.

3-Keep wake from the launches to an absolute minimum. Unless you are speeding to the rescue of someone in distress, there is no excuse for creating wake.

4-Drivers of the launch MUST carry the launch license while on the water. The licenses will be available at the Boat House shortly.

Questions?: Lora Freeman, freemanlora@yahoo.com

Launch Setup Change

Three of the Kippie Kits (launch duffle bags) are now numbered - #1, #2 and #3. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the launch motors. When setting up the launches please make certain to use the correct bag for your launch as the specific registration for that launch is in the front zippered pocket of the duffle. If you need more than one bag in the launch, you can use any of the Kits that are not numbered.

Volunteers Needed for Sunday, August 7, QuickCatch - the last one of the season!

I know you're being asked to do a lot right now with the upcoming regatta on Saturday, but looking ahead, we have another need for volunteers... Please offer to help with the QuickCatch on 8/7. Volunteers will check participants in, carry boats and oars, and row just a little in the 8+ with the participants. We need a few people (2?) to arrive at 9:15 and stay through 12:30. The rest of the volunteers (6?) need to arrive around 10:45 and stay through 12:30. These are fun, low-key... a nice way to meet new people, talk about our great sport, enjoy the morning light, make me quite happy, etc!

There are spots still available for more participants in the session too, so spread the word! Email Sarah to volunteer, marsh.sk@gmail.com

July 29, Friday – Club Barbecue

Bring a dish to share and drinks; after an abbreviated row.

NOTE: we are in need of a club member to take on general organizing responsibility for the four or five BBQ's we hold throughout the summer. Primarily follow a basic checklist to see that certain things get done. Contact Mike Taft for more info at yazbo822@comcast.net.
