Boat Naming at Dominick’s Tomorrow Night
Thursday night, July 14, we will be having a brief boat naming ceremony at Dominick’s. The Ultralite will be named the "Dominick DeVarti". Here is the sequence of events:
- 6:30 – load the Ultralite on the trailer
- 7:30 – Trailer leaves for Dominick’s. There will be rowing for those who don’t want to participate. We will need 8 people minimum that don’t row so we can get the boat off the trailer at Dominick’s.
- 7:45 – trailer arrives in front of Dominick’s. Drop the boat into slings.
- 8:00 – brief ceremony by Mike Taft
- 8:15-8:30 – reload the "Dominick DeVarti"
- 8:30 – Celebrate!
Bring a camera if you like – it will be quite a sight christening a boat on Monroe Street!
COXSWAIN CLINIC, Tonight, WEDNESDAY, JULY 13
If you graduated from LTR before mid-June and do not know how to cox, plan to attend this session on Wednesday, July 13 at regular evening time (6:30 to 8 p.m.). Basic coxing skills will be taught so that you can start fitting into the coxswain rotation, as is expected.
A Few Boathouse Reminders
The Mary Beth Doyle is the Learn To Row boat. IF there is no LTR class, it is a Novice boat. IF there are no novices, Open or AdComp can row it. DO NOT leave the Hebda for the Learn To Rows.
Please put slings away when finished using them. However, leave slings in place in the back of the boathouse for singles.
Please try harder to put the boats away properly. Wednesday morning the Sea Change was way off the marks.
Sign up for boathouse duties on the bulletin board. Ask Tom for details.
MCI REGATTA INFORMATION, July 23th
We are looking for YOUR help for the food table at the MCI Regatta! Your donated food means a maximum profit for the club. Specifically, we are looking for donations of brownies, cookies, muffins and other treats. Also, if baking isn't your strong suit, but you would like to make a donation, we could use a case of water or Gatorade or purchased granola bars or bagels (we can supply you with specifics). Please let Karen L (klleach77@comcast.net) or Lahti L (ldla2@yahoo.com) know if you are willing to help out. We also need a few more folks to sign up to man the food and merchandise tables during the regatta. All help is greatly appreciated!
Sign up now to row at the MCI, our very own regatta, next Saturday, July 23. No entry fees for Club members! Sign up as a set boat in one or more events, and also sign up on the general attendance list indicating how many events you wish to row so the coaches may make some lineups. Signup sheets are at the BH. Signups close next Wednesday.
Volunteers Still Needed!
Please sign up on the sign-up sheet that is posted above the key hanging area. There are over 20 different volunteer positions that will be needed for 3 different shifts (7:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30-1:30 p.m. and last shift from 1:30-4:30 p.m or when all is done). All members are expected to volunteer for at least one shift. If you are rowing that day, you will also need to help set up, in addition to taking a shift (regardless of race time).
Volunteer Position Descriptions:
Parking - Only work the morning shift, will make sure cars of rowers and supporters go to correct lots and stay out of main lot and make sure trailers go to correct places.
Registration Table - Variety of jobs including handing out medals, announcing the races, making sure all waivers are turned in and posting times from races.
Dockmaster - Make sure boats get in and out of the water smoothly and have their bowmarkers, making sure that no one hangs out in the runway where boats are coming on and off the water.
Starters - This is staked start so you'll hold the sterns of the boats still for the start.
Finishers - Must be able to operate a stopwatch. You will keep the times of the race.
Launch Drivers - You must have driven the AARC launches in the past to sign up for this job. You'll either be accompanying a USRA official, a timer or marshaling boats on the course and keeping out canoers.
Selling Food & Merchandise - self explanatory
Please e-mail Cherie Freed (cherif@umich.edu) if you would like to sign up and are not rowing anytime soon.
SAFETY UPDATE - Please read!
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Dept has made several stops in the last week of AARC boats to verify that all safety equipment was present. Regardless of what you may think you know, this appears to be the interpretation of existing law in the State of Michigan. As such, AARC is bound to comply with these
regulations.
*AARC CLUB POLICY,* for all rowing that occurs outside of coached practices (sweep and sculling), we are now REQUIRING all AARC club boats to carry a PFD for each person in the boat. They can usually be crammed near the foot-stretchers. Club scullers can use the inflatable life jackets. This policy applies to all sweep and sculling boats. All PFD’s must be put away after each use, not left around the boathouse.
When a coach's launch is present, it is not necessary for the PFDs to be in the rowing boats; the launch must carry enough PFDs for all rowers under supervision (this means several bags for launches supervising several boats at once) as well as all persons in the launch.
There are PFDs in the large duffle bags near the oars -- IMPORTANT: Do not remove a PFD from the duffle bags - we depend on them each containing all 11! There must be 11 PFDs in each bag at the end of each row, no exceptions, no excuses! If you require a single PFD please take it from the black bags back over the desk area.
Private Boat Owners, we strongly recommend that you use your PFDs when you row. Sorry, but the club is unable to provide them for you.
Questions? Contact Lora Freeman at freemanlora@yahoo.com.
July 29, Friday – Club Barbecue
Bring a dish to share and drinks; after an abbreviated row.
NOTE: we are in need of a club member to take on general organizing responsibility for the four or five BBQ's we hold throughout the summer. Primarily follow a basic checklist to see that certain things get done. Contact Mike Taft for more info at yazbo822@comcast.net.
