COME ONE, COME ALL TO THE JUNE AARC BBQ
It's time for another Ann Arbor Rowing Club Friday BBQ. Please make plans to join us Friday, June 23, for some food and fun at the boathouse following the workout. Burgers, buns, condiments, some beverages, and a few desserts will be provided and we are asking the rest of the club's members to please bring some side dishes to share including chips, salads, dips or whatever else you can dream up.
This year, each monthly BBQ is hosted by a different group from the club. This month's event will be hosted by the ITP program and coordinated by Nora Waite. The remaining groups will be responsible for the following dates: July 28 (Open hosts) and September 22 (Basic hosts). Each group is encouraged to come up with a theme for their BBQ, but it is not required. Thanks to Rachel Cox and Cheryl Chidester for volunteering to host next month. I am seeking a member to help coordinate for the remaining event. If you are interested in this non time-consuming task please email Delores Patterson at dpatterson@detnews.com.
AARC also plans to hold a picnic at a local park complete with Volleyball and other fun activities on Saturday, August 26. We hope to see you there.
SEEKING SPONSORSHIP FOR THIS YEAR'S MCI
We're still looking for sponsors to this year's MCI. If you or your business are interested in this opportunity, or know of a place of business/individuals that you think we'll have a successful approach with, please send those ideas to mci_regatta@umich.edu. If you're interested in becoming of sponsor of this year's MCI, email mci_regatta@umich.edu by June 30th.
Sponsorship opportunities for this year's MCI include:
- Friends of MCI: A black and white message space 1 1/2 x 2 inches to send your friends/boat mates a message. Friends of MCI are those who make donations of $10;
- Red sponsors: A 2 x 2 1/2 inch ad for your organization (including any artwork or coupons you would like to provide) will be included in the MCI event program in addition to acknowledgement in the program as an event sponsor. Red sponsorship is for donations of $25 or more;
- Blue sponsors: In addition to the benefits described above for Red sponsors, with a 2 1/2 x 4 inch ad space, Blue-level sponsorship includes your name as an event sponsor on this year's event t-shirt as well as announcements on the loud speakers throughout the event. Blue sponsors will also have the opportunity to provide materials for the event packet presented to participants on arrival. Blue sponsorship is for donations of $60 or more;
- Presenting sponsors: In addition to the benefits described above for both the Red and Blue sponsors, with a 5 x 4 inch ad space, Presenting sponsors will have their name included on all MCI-related merchandise and signage, and listed as presenting the regatta. Presenting sponsorship is for donations exceeding $100.
MCI T-SHIRT DESGIN CONTEST
This year's t-shirt design contest is under way, and we're still accepting entries. Please email your designs (you can submit more than one!) to mci_regatta@umich.edu by June 23 (that's next Friday). Winner receives a free t-shirt, so good luck!
MAINTENANCE POWER 10!
As most of you know, Tom Kraft use to spend an insane amount of time around the boathouse keeping things tidy, repaired and operational on behalf of AARC. Due to his ongoing duties with the Huron Crew, Tom is unable to spend the same amount of time as before and I know that I, for one, am coming to realize how we did not fully appreciate the extent of his efforts. Each year, at some point, the call goes out to club members to try and put a little extra effort into contributing to club maintenance and upkeep. I'd like to suggest that now is the time, collectively, to make that effort. If each member committed to a Maintenance Power 10 (minutes) just once a week I think we would see a big improvement in the state of the club. Many of the newer members may not feel comfortable knowing what tasks need to be done so here is a list of some items that you can consider which don't require any great amount of time or effort:
Boathouse
- Occasional sweeping of the inner floor tarp will help maintain what is left of the tarp and cut down on dust. Estimated time: 5 minutes
- Pickup trash, empty bottles, dirty towels. Estimated time: 5 minutes
- Consider taking towels home to launder. Estimated time: 10 minutes (assuming you don't watch it spin)
- Organize toolbox and workbenches. Estimated time: 10 minutes
- Take a fuel tank to lunch! Estimated time: 10 minutes (and a few dollars)
Boats
- Tighten down screws on footboards and slides (these are rarely checked and often come lose). Estimated time: 5 minutes/boat
- Take a boat down and clean/wax it! We have a lifetime supply of boat cleaning supplies for the purpose. Estimated time: 30 minutes
- Clean the slides and seat rollers (you wouldn't believe how much better it feels with smooth slides). Estimated time: 10 minutes
Grounds
- Pick up garbage and empty bottles. Estimated time: 5 minutes
- Take the weedwacker out for a spin. Estimated time: 30 minutes
Docks
- We all hate goose poop. I suspect that even geese hate goose poop. There once was a member named Dave Barber that made it his task to sweep the docks first thing in the morning and it was wonderful. Consider occasionally grabbing that broom and racing down to the dock before the others arrive and sweeping off the poop. Your fellow members will be very grateful. You can treat this as a stretching exercise if done properly. Estimated time: 10 minutes (your time may vary depending on goose production)
- How about those few nasty dock boards that trip us every morning? Anyone with some woodworking/deck experience? Estimated time: 1 hour
- Clean garbage and empty bottles around dock and in launches. Estimated time: 5 minutes
Most of the items can be done casually while waiting around for the boats to be set or before and after practice. Give it a try and see if we can all make it a good habit!
Thanks,
David Crouse
