SWEEP PRACTICE ON REGATTA WEEKENDS
For the summer and fall seasons, there will be no Sunday afternoon coached practice on the weekends when AARC attends a regatta. Sorry for any confusion. Enjoy your Sunday relaxing after racing hard!
RACING GEAR ORDER TO BE PLACED THIS WEEK!
If we can get an order in by the end of this week we should have racing gear in time for the Grand Regatta (and our own MCI!) in July. If you would like to order an AARC racing tank or uni (or any other racing gear from Regatta Sport), please email aarcmerch@umich.edu by this Friday at noon and include your name and order request, including size (see http://www.regattasport.com/rs.cfm?p=sizing_chart.cfm for sizing info). Pricing will be determined when the order is placed, but tanks will likely be $30-35. Checks and cash will be accepted for payment upon receiving your item. All orders must be emailed to aarcmerch@umich.edu. Questions? Email Jeff at aarcmerch@umich.edu or Margaret at mlhudson17@gmail.com.
SAFETY: BE SMART ABOUT ROWING IN HOT WEATHER
Please take extra care to protect yourself, especially while in the sun all day at regattas. Suggestions: wear a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, drink plenty of water before, during and after practice/races, limit your time in the sun and stay in the shade whenever possible. Be alert for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself, and your crew, such as extreme weakness, profuse sweating, muscle cramps, pale & clammy skin, vomiting, nausea, headache or chills. (Per USRowing website) Safe rowing!
ENGRAVER NEEDED
As MCI approaches we need to have some engraving done. Does anyone have a local trophy/awards connection? If so, let us know! Email mci_regatta@umich.edu.
THANKS FOR READING
Thanks to all who wrote in after reading last week's email! Robin Schultz-Purves was lucky reader #12.
MIDWEST MASTERS SPRINTS RECAP
Thanks to all for your patience through our first regatta of the season. AARC had a great showing at Columbus and everyone came home with a medal! A special thanks to the Kraft Family for allowing their truck to make the trip even though they couldn't, to David Crouse for stepping up to drive/pull the trailer, to Markus Huebner as acting regatta captain, and to Sarah Elner who made the trip just to cox. Please continue to be patient as we work hard to get your line-ups to you as quickly as possible through the rest of the season. -Tricia Miranda
Saturday June 3 AARC travelled to Columbus OH for the Midwest Masters Sprint Regatta. Heavy rains the day before produced very high, fast water with much floating debris that occasionally delayed the races and thumped on the hulls and oars. The level of competition was quite good and the races were intense and competitive. AARC entered several events and all but two boats medalled. First place finishes went to the Mixed 4+ A-B and the Mens 4+, while bronze medals were won by crews in the Womens 4+, Womens 8+ and the Mixed 8+. Note the Mixed 8+ race came down to the final meter as three boats finished within 0.6 seconds of each other. Andrew Whelan also took a bronze medal in his singles race after a lengthy delay to clear the course. Special thanks to Tom Kraft for lending his truck, to David Crouse for driving the trailer, to Sarah Elner for making the trip just to cox four races, and to Sally Hilger for coxing her first race ever. Congratulations to Joyce Lai and Sally Hilger for competing and surviving their first regatta. Well done all! -Mike Taft
