Equipment Procedures

Before using any AARC equipment, you must be a member in good standing, comply with all Club membership criteria, read and understand Club Rules, and follow OAAR safety guidelines.

  • All Equipment must be logged out and back in. It is the responsibility of the coxswain or in boats with no coxswain, the responsibility of the bowman.
  • The boat should be visually inspected before leaving the boathouse to check that there is no obvious damage, missing fins, riggers, etc. If damage is found, do not row the shell and report it to the Equipment Manager.
  • All hardware should be checked periodically throughout your row and tightened as needed. AARC uses the "two finger rule" for rigger nuts. (Ask for a demonstration if needed.) This prevents loss of hardware and further damage to the shell.
  • The boat should be visually inspected upon its return to the boathouse.
  • If there are any problems with the boat, email the Equipment Manager (Jerry Hoffman, JHoffman@A2crew.com) with a detailed description of the problem as soon as possible, and also note the problem in the logbook. Note: loose hardware is the responsibility of the rower.
  • Equipment that is out of service should be tagged with caution tape.
  • These guidelines apply to all other AARC equipment - oars, lights, launches etc.

Remember, not only do we have to share the river with three other rowing organizations (not to mention the canoe livery, fisherman, giant carp, geese, turtles, herons, etc.), but we need to share the equipment among a large number of rowers within the club. Following the above procedures will go a long way toward helping everyone have a fun and safe rowing season.
